American Express to eliminate 4,000 jobs

NEW YORK - In an attempt to cut another $800 million in costs, American Express will eliminate 4,000 jobs.

That’s about 6% of the firm’s global workforce.

While a number of affected workers were notified of the layoffs in recent days, company spokeswoman Joanna Lambert said the rest will be informed later. That always makes for a pleasant situation. .

The recent layoffs follow the 7,000 layoffs announced in October of last year.

LOS ANGELES - As more and more of us are receiving pink slips, do we get in a parting shot or just go quietly into that good night?

Here's someone who's doing it incorrectly.

Feel free to vent.

The Los Angeles Times examines how the farewell e-mail is rapidly becoming elevated to an art form.

While delivering an electronic parting shot might seem like a good idea, it’s still probably not as satisfying as slashing the tires on the boss’s car, clocking one of the HR goons across the jaw or just stealing whatever office supplies you can grab on your way out the door.

The preferred term for mass layoffs is “streamlining”

NEW YORK - It was announced on Monday that retailer Macy’s would cut 7,000 jobs.

"I just got laid off ... but I managed to grab what I could before I hit the door!"

The company will also consolidate its four regional divisions — East, Central, West and Florida — into a single entity.

Terry J. Lundgren, chairman, president and chief executive of Macy’s, told the New York Times that the move would help better position the company for 2010 … or, reassuringly, whenever consumers are ready to start spending again.

The way things are going, that might be a long time coming.
