Some of the clinics are run by for-profit management groups and are cleaning up by catering to addicts and drug dealers.

In Florida, increased domestic violence tied to worsening economy

TALAHASSEE, Fla. - The Florida Coalition Against Domestic Violence has released a report that shows state domestic violence shelters saw a nearly 40% increase in demand since last fall, and experts say the jump is related to the worsening economy.

The report concludes that perpetrators of in-home assaults often step up their activities when out of work because they are home more often during times of unemployment.

Florida lawmaker proposes drug testing for the unemployed

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Unemployment could become even more humiliating if one Florida lawmaker has his way.

Sen. Mike Bennett wants the unemployed to pee in a cup in ordee to collect benefits.

Senator Mike Bennett, a Republican from Sarasota, is sponsoring a bill that would randomly subject unemployed Floridians to drug tests in order for them to collect unemployment benefits.

If the test is failed, the already unlucky jobless would lose their unemployment benefits for a year.

And who would pay for the tests? According to Bennet’s plan, the cost of each drug test would come out of individual benefits.

Aren’t Republicans like Bennett always harping on getting “government out of peoples’ lives?”

Apparently, that doesn’t apply if you’ve had the misfortune of being laid off.
