WASHINGTON - Americans are stuck, it seems.

Americans not migrating for low-paying jobs anymore.

During the Great Depression, migration was the ticket for Americans in search of jobs and greener pastures, but here in the Great Recession, we seem to be staying put.

Experts are concerned on two fronts. One, that Americans are unable or unwilling to relocate in search of jobs. And, two, that the lack of movement affects the economic activity associated with the act of relocating.

Of course, it seems as if these concerned experts are unaware that there is no magical Shangri-La where good jobs are plentiful right now … and who wants to go to the expense of relocating for the typical “McJob?”

In Florida, increased domestic violence tied to worsening economy

TALAHASSEE, Fla. - The Florida Coalition Against Domestic Violence has released a report that shows state domestic violence shelters saw a nearly 40% increase in demand since last fall, and experts say the jump is related to the worsening economy.

"I really can't wait for him to get back to work."

The report concludes that perpetrators of in-home assaults often step up their activities when out of work because they are home more often during times of unemployment.

LOS ANGELES - Back in the old days, anxieties about the economy and dwindling jobs were dealt with by drinking to excess and then beating the kids or kicking the dog.

We live in more enlightened times now, and there’s a whole pharmacopeia devoted to cooling out the nervous, the anxious and those who just want to cop a buzz and manage a few hours of escape.
